2023 Day At the Capitol

Wisconsin Family Council (WFC), in conjunction with Wisconsin Association of Christian Schools (WACS), is hosting a WACS-exclusive "Day at the Capitol." This is a day devoted to connecting students with state government. Representatives from different branches of our government will speak, along with others who influence public policy in Wisconsin, with plenty of time built in for Q&A.  Plus, we’ll have some surprises throughout the day! Schools also have the option of taking a state capitol tour, followed by a WFC-hosted “heritage tour.” A very important part of the day is time dedicated to each school connecting directly with their state senator and state representative.

This year, WFC's WACS “Day at the Capitol” is Thursday, March 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The registration fee is $12 and includes lunch. The attached flyer includes all the details. Limited seating is available. To reserve your place EARLY, please register by clicking here. Space is limited and registrations must be in by Monday, March 6!

2022 Day at the Capitol

Picture
Thursday, March 17, Wisconsin Family Council hosted a Day at the Capitol for over 100 students and sponsors from schools in the Wisconsin Association of Christian Schools (WACS). Special speakers from all three branches of government addressed the group, including Senate President Chris Kapenga (R-Delafield), Representative Elijah Behnke (R-Oconto) and Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Bradley. The students visited their legislators' offices, discussed a bill from this session that would have made Colby cheese Wisconsin’s official cheese, and also participated in a school competition that included a scavenger hunt in the capitol.

Then on Tuesday, March 22, WFC hosted another WACS Day at the Capitol for families who home-school through Academy of Excellence Online.  Academy of Excellence is a member of WACS. Once again we had over 100 people in the largest hearing room in the capitol. Both days we were filled to capacity! Tuesday's guests heard from State Representative JeremyThiesfeldt (R-Fond du Lac), Sam Krebs from Sen. Chris Kapenga's office, and WI Supreme Court Justice Pat Roggensack. The families visited legislative offices, had a capitol scavenger hunt, toured the capitol, had a special Heritage Tour with Julaine (see picture at left), and discussed the Colby cheese bill with Micah Pearce, WFC's Exec. VP.

Julaine Appling, President of Wisconsin Family Action and Wisconsin Family Council commented, “These days are highlights for us. We want the government to come alive for the next generation and for them to understand our government better and want to be good citizens. We keep the day moving, bring in good speakers, give them some snacks, feed them lunch, have them visit their legislators, and include a tour of our beautiful and historic capitol building. We are honored to be the legislative liaison for WACS and to host their schools and families for special days like this.

2018 WACS Day at the Capitol - Thanks for attending!

Energy! The largest hearing room in the State Capitol was bursting with it as we packed in over 120 students and about 20 teachers, parents, administrators and staff from seven of our WACS schools. From start to finish, our special speakers, representing all 3 branches of government, talked about the importance of Christians being involved in government and how good government reflects God’s principles. Daniel Suhr from Gov. Walker’s office, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, Sen. Dave Craig, Assembly Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt and Supreme Court Justice Dan Kelly held the attention of young and old(er) alike. WFC president Julaine Appling conducted a school competition with 2 representatives from each school participating. First place went to Bay City Christian School and second to Calvary Baptist School from Menomonee Falls. The day ended with several schools staying for a tour of the capitol and a special heritage tour of the capitol with Ms. Appling.

Youth Empowerment [Schools]
We need young leaders, but if they're ill-informed or lack critical thinking skills, they will not be ready for the cultural and policy challenges of the future.  That's why I spent time with the students of the Wisconsin Association of Christian Schools as they sought to learn more about good governance at the state Capitol..

2017 WFC Day at the Capitol

Every two years Wisconsin Family Council presents their very popular "Day at the Capitol." This is a day devoted to connecting you with your state government. They had key legislators and others speak and answer questions about legislative priorities this session. In addition, there was a couple of options where you could learn more about the heritage of our state capitol and participate in an exclusive question and answer time with WFC president Julaine Appling. A very important part of the day was connecting directly with elected officials, up close and personal.

WACS schools joined a group of nearly 300 people from around the state for Wisconsin Family Council’s (WFC) 2017 Day at the Capitol on March 23.  It was a great day of excellent speakers, including  Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, Dr. Lowell Holtz, a candidate for State Superintendent of Public Instruction, legislative leaders,  key legislators working on important bills, and others. Conservative legislators  dropped by throughout the day to say hello.  WFC president Julaine Appling held a special fun educational session for students highlighted by candy and gift cards. Before lunch attendees visited their state representative and state senator, many getting their picture taken with them.  An optional heritage presentation of the state capitol (100 years old this year!) and a grassroots workshop especially for pastors & churches rounded out the day. Four fortunate people headed home with door prizes—a Kindle Fire, an iPad Mini, a set of David Barton’s Heritage of America DVDs and an American Patriot’s Bible.

2016 WACS Day at the Capitol

On Tuesday, March 15, over 110 students, pastors, administrators, and teachers from 8 WACS schools attended the Day at the Capitol, sponsored by WACS and Wisconsin Family Council. Speakers included State Representative Jesse Kremer, Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, WI Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Bradley, Nate Nelson from American Majority Wisconsin and Amy Sikma, a former legislative staffer. Each session included time for a Q&A, and Julaine Appling, president of Wisconsin Family Council, kept the students on their toes with a Wisconsin civics quiz, complete with prizes. Schools also spent time visiting with their elected officials. Initial reports are the day was a success as students connected directly with their government!

Day at the Capitol - February 11, 2014

WACS hosted a Day at the Capitol on Tuesday, February 11, 2014. This year four schools brought 50 students down to join Julaine Appling from the Wisconsin Family Council for the day. We had presentations by Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Gableman, Lieutenent Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, state senators and assembly members, as well as legislative aides. It was a great day learning about the legislative process and seeing the workings of our State Capitol.

Thanks to our schools for some of the great comments on the day!

“I appreciate the opportunity for students to see Wisconsin government in action. It is worth the day when a student comes back interested in getting involved because of their attendance at the WACS Day at the Capitol.” - Teacher

“It was interesting to see the assembly in action as they debated a real bill.” – Student

“I enjoyed learning about the architecture and art in the Capitol Building.” – Student

“I didn’t realize there were so many Christians involved in our state government” – Teacher
